1. Assure an Adequate Local Public Health Infrastructure The CHB monitors the health of the community and identifies community health problems (assessment), develops policies and plans to address important health issues (policy development), and makes sure that criticial public health and activities/services are available to community members.
2. Promote Health Communities and Healthy Behaviors These apply to behaviors of all ages as well as to communities based on best practice guidelines, evidenced based strategies and state/local expertise. This area addresses the leading health indicators such as physical activity, overweight and obesity, tobacco use, substance abuse, responsible sexual behavior, mental health and injury, and also violence. It also focuses on all populations, including the healthy, vulnerable and diverse, as well as all age groups from mothers, infants and children to the elderly.
3. Prevent the Spread of Infectuous Disease Infectuous disease prevention and control includes activities of detecting and preventing the spread of acute and communicable diseases. Local public health plays a key role in assisting with local and state disease outbreaks.
4. Protect Against Environmental Health Hazards Local public health assesses and helps to address clean air, clean water and sanitation, safe food, healthy communities, and preparation for disasters.
5. Prepare For and Respond to Disasters, and Assist Communities in Recovery Public Health is actively planning with other emergency responders to be able to respond to disasters such as a flood, tornado, infectious disease, or manmade disasters such as terrorism. It also includes unexpected occurence of diseases.
6. Assure the Quality and Accessibility of Health Services Assess the health care capacity of local communities, including the quality of services provided and accessibility to those health services; inform people of the assessment results; and link people to needed services.
